Hi. I’m Richard Cox, a professional writer, copy-editor and proofreader who freelances under the name of Ridgeway Editorial.
Let’s start with what’s most important: why do I do what I do? That’s an easy one. I believe life is for learning and, if you love to learn, life will offer everything you need. I write, edit and proofread because I learn while putting my strongest skills to great use; it also happens to be fun!

Born in West Norfolk, I spent my childhood with family and close friends. At school, I worked hard and soon realised that the more effort I put into life, the more I would get out.
In 2009, I received First Class Honours in Journalism (BA) from the University of Lincoln. I produced content for print, online, television and radio which gave me a strong set of publishing skills to build my career on. By the time I’d graduated, I’d completed placements at Sky News and was working in London as an Edit Assistant on corporate films.
In 2010 and 2011, I lived in Bristol and worked on film and television productions with the likes of the BBC’s Natural History Unit. As exciting as it was, I had other plans in mind, not least to complete further study and to see the world.
I soon moved to Brighton and enrolled at the University of Sussex for a Masters of International Criminal Law (LLM). I chose the subject to pursue my broad interest in law, society and politics. I studied part-time whilst working full-time as a News Reporter and Web Editorial Assistant at a local independent school; time management, mastered!
At work by day I gathered news, wrote press releases, authored web content and designed marketing materials. But in the early and late hours at home, I studied legal journals, wrote essays and revised. For my dissertation, I investigated the power of civil society organisations to prevent atrocities in Cambodia. Answering to my inner journalist, I travelled to the country twice to conduct interviews and gather secondary resource materials. I’m very proud to have been awarded a Distinction for my thesis.
Yet, as life would have it, I wasn’t destined to be an international lawyer, or criminal! In 2014 I married Becky and, shortly afterwards, we decided to base our life in Swindon, Wiltshire, near to family and not far from the scenic and historic footpath, The Ridgeway. It’s just a stunning place to walk with our dog, Daisy.
From 2014 to late 2016, I worked as a Copywriter and Assistant Manager on a corporate rebranding project for Nationwide Building Society. I was responsible for developing and delivering the business’ tone of voice and style guide across a range of customer communications. For my continuing personal development, I gained qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (Copywriting) and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP).
Life is for learning. And with that in mind, I am now the sole Director of Ridgeway Editorial Limited. My aim is to contribute to the learning experiences of others by aiding the production of high-quality, balanced and well-researched editorial materials.
